Advances in Mechanics of Materials for Environmental and Civil Engineering

This book deals with both mathematical modeling and experimental studies related to systems relevant for various civil engineering fields. The book explores the intriguing effects of phenomena occurring at lower length scales on the behavior at higher scales, as the influence of polypropylene macro-fiber thickness in fiber-reinforced concrete mechanical strengths. Generally speaking, the book addresses several key topics, including artificial intelligence applied to the control and monitoring of construction site personnel, finite element models for endplate beam-to-column connections under various load conditions, random functionally graded micropolar beams, and many others. The book explores the design and study of microstructures aimed at increasing the toughness and durability of novel materials in building and construction, based also on the re-utilization of residues and wastes of metallurgical industry produces. In conclusion, the book highlights innovative approaches to various fields of civil engineering, including microstructures for enhanced mechanical properties, offering insights into design strategies.

Francesco dell'Isola is a Full Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering (DICEAA), University of L'Aquila (Italy) since 2016. Since 2015, he is the Responsible Italian Scientific Expert at the Laboratoire International Associé (LIA) Coss&Vita, a French-Italian international laboratory. Since 2016, he is also Director of the International Research Center M&MoCS (University of L'Aquila). His research activities chiefly focus on the synthesis and design of metamaterials, and on generalized models in continuum mechanics.
Emilio Barchiesi is an Assistant Professor of Strength of materials at the University of Sassari, Italy. He is mainly interested in the synthesis of micro-structured materials on demand through an approach integrating asymptotic homogenization techniques, three-dimensional printing and experimental digital image correlation techniques. He has done research as a postdoctoral fellow at the International Research Center for the Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems of the University of L'Aquila and at the Institut de Recherche Dupuy de Lôme, École Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Brest. He has been Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow at the Université Bretagne Sud.

Francisco James León Trujillo is a Research Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and the Institute of Scientific Research (IDIC) of the University of Lima (Peru) since 2018. Since 2021, he is the coordinator of the Research Group in Numerical and Computational Methods, Computer Graphics and Scientific Computing at IDIC. His research activities are mainly focused on the application of geomatics to engineering and the environment, and on the study of generalized models in masonry.
